New symptoms anyone else suffered these?

Dear all

My husband has had UC and IBS for 10 years. He currently takes 200mg of azathioprine, 5mg Amitriptyline and 2.4 grams of Mezavant daily. Since mid May this year he has been suffering some different symptoms and we can't decide if they are UC related or something new and wondered if anyone could offer any advice. He has had lots of blood tests recently and none indicate that he is having a flare up, but he has suffered active UC and his bloods have been fine so this is not a good indicator for him. He also had a colonoscopy on 12/7/10 which showed his UC was active but it was unusually one sided (has anyone else had this?). He is seeing the consultant on 13/08/10 to discuss the colonoscopy results and the new symptoms and we would like to go with as much information as possible.

Anyway the new symptoms are:
Head and neck ache, feeling hot, nausea, feeling weak and faint, bloating, tired (and feeling worse when tired), not being able to face eating and feeling like he is 'jammed' up inside. Last night he also suffered racing heart, but this has only happened once. There have been 6 very severe episodes which have always happened during or directly after meals. He is 'wiped' out for days after each of these.

Can anyone else offer any advice or if these are just new UC symptoms for him.

Just a thought but has your husband had Thyroid blood tests done ? would be worth it if not.

Hi thanks for this - he is currently being tested for coeliacs as the consultant thinks it may be this, but thyroid hasn't been mentioned we will get him tested for this.

We now think that the problems are all being caused by the Mezavant which he started taking 2 weeks before the symptoms started. Having looked at the very long list of side effects closely he seems to have quite a few of them! We always thought that my husband may have problems with it as he is allergic to sulphalasides but he was assured that this was a modern drug and with it being gastro resistant and slow release he should be OK.

He had consulted the IBD nurses who advised him to stop taking the Mezavant for a week, but the short break made no difference.

Anyone else had problems with Mezavant?
