Information for those with Ulcerative Colitis

The beneficial effects of walking

Gentle/moderate walking can have an extremely beneficial effect on Ulcerative Colitis. The exercise diverts blood away from the Colon to the main circulation - which in turn can lead to a reduction in inflammation. The gentle movement also helps to remove any abdominal cramps.

In addition to the above benefits - half an hour a day of walking will also improve fitness and the feeling of well being. Walking can also be used as a social activity - relieving stress and allowing you to meet people.

Many people may be concerned about the issue of lack of toilet facilities - which can be quite a challenge. I have though found that after the first 15 minutes or so of walking any bowel cramps tend to settle down - and you can enjoy the rest of the walk just like anyone else.
